What this site records
A short, plain answer: server logs, an email address if you subscribe, and literally nothing else.
This is a small independent archive, not a company, and there is no data business anywhere near it. So that you can decide for yourself what to make of that, here is the whole of it: what is collected, why it is collected, what is never collected, and how to get something removed.
What is collected
Like almost every web server, the one that serves these pages writes a log entry when a page is requested. Those entries contain the IP address the request came from, the date and time, the page requested, the referring page if your browser sends one, and the browser or client string your device reports. That is the log file, and it is the only thing recorded about a visit. It exists to keep the site running and to spot abuse — a request flood, a scanner, a broken link — and it is not used to build any kind of profile of a reader.
If you subscribe to the monthly dispatch, the email address you type is stored so that the message can be sent. Nothing else is asked for and nothing else is kept: no name, no location, no interests, no history of which pages you opened before subscribing.
If you write to the archive through the contact page, your message and address are kept so that the correspondence can be answered and, where relevant, so that a correction or observation can be checked and logged. If you ask for your message to stay private, that is honoured and the note will not be published.
What is not collected
- No advertising scripts, no ad networks, no retargeting pixels.
- No analytics service — no page-view counters, no session recording, no heat maps.
- No social-media embeds by default — nothing from another platform is requested until you click a play poster, and that single exception is set out in full further down this page.
- No cross-site identifiers, and no attempt to link a reader across visits.
- No sale, rental or sharing of anything with anyone. There is nothing to sell.
You can check all of that yourself with the browser's developer tools: the page loads one stylesheet from this domain and one web-font stylesheet, and no other external requests. That font stylesheet is a request to a font service, which is worth knowing — the fonts used here are served by Google Fonts, so that request leaves your browser to a third party, and a reader who wants no external requests at all can block it without losing the text of the page.
One page is a partial exception to the no-embeds rule in the list above, and it is worth stating separately. The video archive lists third-party clips, and the posters on that page are drawn by this site and served from this site — they are not hotlinked from anywhere, so simply opening the page requests nothing new. A player appears only if you click a poster: at that point, and not before, your browser fetches a frame from youtube-nocookie.com, and YouTube may then set its own cookies, see the address the request came from, and note which video you asked for. Those cookies are not ours, we cannot read them, and we receive nothing from them; a reader who never clicks a poster never contacts YouTube at all.
Cookies
This site sets no cookies of its own. There is no cookie banner because there is nothing to consent to: no session cookie, no preference cookie, no tracking cookie. The only cookies that could appear in your browser while reading these pages would be ones set by something outside this site — the font service mentioned above, or a browser extension you have installed — and those are not ours to see or control.
How long it is kept, and how to have it removed
Server logs are kept for as long as they are useful for the two purposes above and are then rotated away; they are not archived for years. Subscription addresses are kept while the subscription lasts. Anything you send to the archive is kept while the correspondence or the correction is current.
If you want an address removed, or a message deleted, or an observation log entry taken down, write to editor@flat.diazites.com from the address in question, or describe the entry well enough for it to be found. Say what you want removed and it will be removed, without argument and without asking why. If an entry in the observation log was published with your credit and you would now rather it were anonymous or gone, that is an ordinary request and it is honoured.
This is one small site run by one small archive. We do not want your data, we have no way to profit from it, and we are not selling anything. We can see that a page was requested, and we can see an email address if you gave us one on purpose. Both are on this page rather than buried in a legal document, and both can be removed on request. That is the entire policy.
Changes to this page
If anything here changes — a new subscription service, a different way of handling correspondence — this page is updated the same day and the update date at the top changes with it. The About page explains how the archive frames its claims and how corrections are handled, and the contact page is where to write.
